Diet After Surgery Or Injury
Posted on 10-5-2010

All vitamins that dissolve in water, especially those needed by the adrenals, should be increased immediately after any injury and kept unusually high during the entire convalescence; and "heavy vitamin supplementation" has been found to add tremendously to the comfort of the patient. For the first few days, the anti-stress formula might be taken every two hours, and supplements of minerals and all other vitamins obtained with each meal. To save the time of busy physicians and nurses, these supplements can be brought from home and given by some visiting member of the family.

When food cannot be held on the stomach, physicians give intravenous feedings, which usually supply sugar, salt, digested proteins, and perhaps vitamin Bl. These nutrients are valuable but cannot meet the needs of stress. All vitamins and essential fatty acids, however, absorb well through the skin. If vomiting persists, oils, vitamins A, D, E, and massive quantities of powdered vitamin C and the B vitamins (stirred into salve or cold cream) can be applied directly to the skin several times daily.

One physician, giving patients who have had severe burns, accidents, or major surgery a can of pureed meat per hour or continuously by nasal-stomach tube -16 cans daily supplying a total of 500 grams of protein - reports "dramatic results"; healing sets in immediately and the patients feel stronger, are more cheerful, and have little gas distention. He has found that only 135 grams of protein daily assure rapid healing after hernia repair or the removal of an appendix or gall bladder.

Newly formed tissue is particularly high in the sulfur-containing amino acids, cystine and methionine. Because milk and egg yolks are rich sources of these amino acids, healing has been tremendously accelerated when 6 small eggnogs containing 2 yolks each have been taken daily. Highly fortified pep-up containing whole milk, oil, and 6 or more eggs or egg yolks would undoubtedly accelerate healing even more. Milk, buttermilk, yogurt, eggnogs, and juices should be taken in preference to tea or coffee. When much blood has been lost, liver damage frequently occurs, and the diet must be designed to rebuild both blood and liver tissue.

The disuse of muscles and bones during immobilization has been thought to be the cause of the continuous high urinary losses of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, nitrogen, and other nutrients. It now appears that these losses are brought on by the stress of immobilization rather than disuse and can be largely alleviated by an anti-stress diet. To prevent kidney stones, however, vitamins B6 and D, magnesium, and no less than 2.5 grams (2,500 milligrams) of calcium should be obtained daily; and to compensate for the losses during stress, the diet should be kept highly adequate long after convalescence appears to be complete.

The shock of any injury usually causes a temporary lack of enzymes and hydrochloric acid, and supplements of both can tremendously aid absorption and accelerate healing. Recovery is also much faster when small frequent meals are served; and the more ill the person, the greater is the necessity for frequent feedings.
