All types of experimental cancers grow more rapidly when the diet is high in calories, regardless of whether the excessive calories are supplied by fats or carbohydrates. Conversely, low calorie diets devoid of refined carbohydrate and hydrogenated.fat retard cancer growth; and rats kept on stock diets of natural foods are protected against cancer. High calorie diets of refined foods also accelerate the growth of human malignancies.
Although excess protein is converted into calories, experimental cancers develop most rapidly on low-protein diets. Cancer growth has not increased even when protein supplied 50 per cent of the calories; and the animals maintained far better general health than when the intake was low. Yeasts rich in nucleic acid--which food yeast is-- "significantly increased" the survival of rats given cancer producing substances. All yeasts are rich in protein and the B vitamins.
Tumor growth is inhibited by vitamin A, which is not found in cancer cells unless stored in the parent tissue. Vitamins BI, B12, inositol, and biotin appear neither to stimulate nor to retard cancer growth. Cancer cells have a much lower content of vitamin B2 and pantothenic acid than do normal tissues, and giving these vitamins protects the body without stimulating the growth of malignancies. Diets deficient in vitamin B6 have caused certain types of experimental cancers to grow more slowly, but normal cells were so harmed that life was not prolonged. Vitamin-B6-deficient diets given to patients with leukemia or cancer of the lymph glands caused several to develop convulsions but did not retard the cancers. PABA has inhibited certain malignancies in humans, whereas folic acid has caused some types of cancer to regress and the growth of others to be accelerated.
No Case Is Hopeless
Dr. Charles W. Mayo has emphasized that no case of cancer is hopeless. He tells of a 60- year-old woman upon whom he operated in 1950 for cancer of the descending colon. Because the malignancy had spread to the liver and other organs, her family was told that she could be expected to live only a few months. Yet she made a spontaneous recovery, and when reexamined at the Mayo Clinic in 1956, 1960, and 1962, no trace of cancer was found. Dr. Mayo hazards no guess as to what may have brought about the recovery but, with the tenderness and compassion of a great man, he stresses that such a case is a blessing because it enables physicians to tell patients that there is always a chance.
Several similar cases have come to my attention. A number of people have also had skin cancers disappear after improving their diets, applying the contents of vitamin-E capsules directly to the growth, and using PABA ointment as protection from the sun.
Radiation
X-ray treatments and other radiation therapy destroy vitamins A, C, E, K, several B vitamins, and essential fatty acids. The destruction of vitamin C is almost immediate, but that of vitamin A and fatty acids can be largely prevented if huge quantities of vitamin E are taken. Simultaneously many harmful substances are formed from the destroyed malignant tissue; but the liver detoxifies these provided vitamins C, E, protein, and especially methionine are generously supplied. Severe radiation burns have been avoided, pain decreased, and scarring reduced when vitamin E has been taken internally and applied to the surface.
The vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, hemorrhaging, and severe anemia that usually occur after therapy with radioactive cobalt, x-rays, mustard gas, or other mitotic poisons have been largely prevented by vitamins C, E, and the B vitamins provided generous amounts are started several days prior to treatment. In most cases vitamin B6 alone has prevented vomiting. At New York's Montefiore Hospital cancer patients given 3 tablespoons of yeast daily starting a week before receiving "heavy irradiation" remained symptom- free, whereas patients not given yeast had severe vomiting and developed marked anemia.
Because of the stress of radiations, large amounts of vitamin C, pantothenic acid, and protein--the anti-stress formula and pep-up containing many egg yolks--should be taken around the clock after each treatment.
