All Nutrients Aid In Healing
Posted on 09-30-2010

When the diet is adequate and vitamin E is amply supplied, wounds can heal without scarring; surgical incisions leave only a thin, soft line free of hard keloid tissue; adhesions can be prevented; and the itching, drawing pain caused by the contraction of scar tissue--excruciating when large areas of flesh have been excised, as after the removal of a cancerous breast--does not occur. By decreasing the need for oxygen, vitamin E allows fewer cells to be harmed when blood vessels have been cut, mangled, or burned; and it increases the number and speed of formation of new blood vessels into a damaged area.

A major problem after surgery, injury, or childbirth is that blood clots often form where an incision is made or injections or intravenous feedings are given. Such a clot, carried in the circulating blood and known as an embolism--a clot with the wanderlust--can lodge in any tight quarters. If it blocks a deep vein of the leg, it causes varicose veins and/or phlebitis, or inflammation of the blood vessels. Both varicose veins and phlebitis have been produced experimentally by surgery on animals deficient in vitamin E. Dogs and rats not given this vitamin prior to surgery form many more clots than do well-fed animals. These clots block the circulation, causing the nearby veins to become overloaded with blood (varicose veins) and the walls of the blood vessels to become inflamed, swollen, and crowded with dead cells which are replaced by inelastic scar tissue. This effect cannot be produced by diets lacking any other nutrient.

There is no studies in which vitamin E has been taken before operations, but when 100 surgical patients were given 200 milligrams of this vitamin daily after surgery, they had far fewer clots and less severe phlebitis than the same number not receiving the vitamin. In other studies, three times more clots formed when the vitamin was not given and the reaction to the clots was much more severe than in patients allowed vitamin. The inflammation and swelling of phlebitis also disappeared in patients receiving 300 units of vitamin E daily.

New cells cannot be made without essential fatty acids; and as with vitamin C, the strength of connective tissue formed at the site of a wound is in proportion to the amount of protein obtained. New proteins needed for healing, however, can be synthesized only when enzymes containing vitaminsB2, B6, folic acid, copper, magnesium, and several other nutrients are present. Vitamin A also plays a role in forming connective tissue. Wounds heal slowly if at all when vitamin is under supplied; thus unless all nutrients are available, rapid recovery cannot occur.

Even the lack of a single nutrient can prevent healing. For example, when folic-acid deficiencies have been produced in patients, ulcers, bedsores, and tiny wounds caused by taking biopsies have refused to heal. Conversely, wounds, incisions, and bedsores that for months had failed to heal and skin grafts that had consistently broken down have all healed rapidly after an adequate diet unusually high in protein was given.
