During her girlhood Randi had few playmates. She was uneasy around her peers (was excessively demanding and clinging), and was frightened that her homoerotic interests would become transparent, thereby further stigmatizing her. While not schizoid, she did have difficulty relating to both boys and girls. Her overt behavior could not be explained as entirely tomboyish. Indeed, she had dolls, wore dresses, and seemed, on the surface, to be evolving a normal female role identity. However, she was intensely jealous of her brother's relationship to father; her envy of father's special treatment of Samuel led Randi to develop a wish to become a boy, and be loved and special just like her brother.
As Randi's homoerotic fantasies increased, she became increasingly aware of her intense sexual feelings for women. However, these feelings were not limited to girls and older women. Indeed, her heightened sexual feelings could lead in almost any direction. Two sources of trauma, however, seemed to have organized her homosexuality. Once when she had a vaginal infection mother had to apply some medicine internally (to douche her). Randi was horrified and ashamed, and traced her hatred 'of her female genitals to that incident. Second, when a friend of mother's made sexual advances to Randi she became panicky that her homoerotic feelings were so transparent that she would be sexually vulnerable to all women.
Although Randi was less than enthusiastic about her menarche, she did not rebel against it; nor was she terribly upset about her breast development. It was only later in adolescence, when her transsexual wishes crystallized, that she developed an abhorrent reaction to her breasts and genitals. During early adolescence Randi became involved with a number of men and women in sexual relationships. After a series of confusing sexual incidents seduction by a friend of her mother; evolving a gay identity by age 12 Randi eventually had a confrontation with her parents over her relationship with an older man, twenty two years her senior.
At age 13 Randi ran away from home, hiding out for six weeks in another country. During this period Randi became involved in the gay community and began to formally consolidate her transsexual identity. She was involved in a number of sordid relationships, exposed to a wide variety of underworld practices, and introduced to street drugs. Randi was reluctantly returned home by the police (after spending three days in jail). The family reacted by uprooting themselves and moving to another country.
