Freudian Theory About Sex
Posted on 06-30-2011

In the last few years, there has been a turnaround in professional writing about sexuality. Freudian theory about sex is no longer accepted, except by some die hard analysts whose allegiance verges on the religious in that it is not susceptible to change by evidence. The present generation of sex therapists' writings stress the values of sensual pleasure, giving and receiving, communication, flexibility, and experimentation with a wide range of sexual activities. This is in marked contrast to Freudian theory's rigid focus on organs and orgasms. Although the presumed intent of the current literature is to enable people to relax, to enjoy whatever works for them, and to accept female sexuality as legitimate, the media have somehow managed to subvert this message. That is, instead of reflecting the nondemanding, nonperformance oriented model stressed in today's sex therapy, the recent flood of popular books, magazines, and advice columns has done quite the opposite. Much of this material is pejorative, and it demands that a woman be aroused, multiorgasmic, and skilled at a wide variety of lovemaking techniques. Similarly, a man must be hypersexual and must be able to produce all sorts of orgasms in large numbers in his wife, or he is an inadequate lover.

This pressure for a man to keep track of his own and his partner's arousal and orgasm, and to define his adequacy by the number of orgasms she has, tends to have a disastrous effect on the couple's sexual relationship. We now see couples seeking therapy, after reading current literature, for complaints such as desire for the wife to have multiple orgasms, occurrence of female coital orgasm on only 3 or 4 out of 5 weekly lovemaking sessions, or failure of the man to get multiple erections. Somehow the popular media have transformed "sex is a legitimate activity for men and women" into "sex is a required activity, and you must be very, very good at it." Hopefully, present day therapists will not treat such cases but will instead reassure such therapy seekers that they are functioning normally and not in need of therapy. Although the therapist can give this permission to relax and enjoy what was satisfying to the couple before reading some pejorative article, the preventive impact of simply changing the media approach to sexual competence would certainly be much more widespread. Ultimately, this change in the popular media will not occur until the writings of sex therapy professionals contain much less emphasis on functioning and orgasm and much more emphasis on pleasure. As Comfort (1972) has noted, "In writing descriptively about sex, it is hard not to be solemn however unsolemnly we play in bed".
