Techniques Used with Mothers
This module is introduced to the mothers in the same way as it is to the children; the mothers are shown the pictures used in the children's group and are told about the step by step examples that are given to the children regarding good touch and bad touch. This facilitates the mothers' discussion of inappropriate sexual advances that might have been made toward them when they were children. The topic of nurturance is raised, and the mother's ability to obtain nurturance from significant people in their own childhoods is discussed. Many women reveal that their sexual abusers were their only source of nurturance; as a result, they may still feel guilty about enjoying or seeking out sexualized nurturance with others. Previously denied or repressed memories of sexualized contact begin to emerge. Some of the women then begin to wonder if it is possible to trust males, and express concerns about further exploitation.
The term "sexual abuse" is then defined for the mothers as inappropriate verbal or physical sexualized contact with children, usually without penetration. An attempt is made to normalize the sexualized behaviors that can occur, in order to assist those mothers who deny the occurrence of sexual abuse to become more accepting of the possibility that it might indeed have occurred.
Reactions of Mothers
Before the exercise on private parts is presented to the children, the mothers are asked whether they want the child therapists to introduce terminology for the genitals in their discussion of private parts. Most mothers appear to be uncomfortable about this and do not want their children to learn the technical names for sexual parts of the body.
They anxiously express concern that their children will utilize these terms inappropriately with other people; this apparently reflects a wish to minimize their own, as well as their children's, sexuality. The consequence of mothers' typically punitive reactions to their children's masturbation are explored. The mothers gradually seem to become more aware of their own sexuality and more open to exploring their children's sexuality as well. Some of the mothers have raised questions about their own nudity around their children and about bathing with their children.
