In America, there exists a false concept of the female form which is demonstrated in thousands of subtle ways. One not so subtle way is the popular Barbie doll, and others of her ilk. Assuming a bust measurement of 36 inches, Barbie's proportions work out at a 36 inch bust, an 18 inch waist, and 33 inch hips. This is an unattainable ideal for the average little girl, who will develop into the average round or pear shaped woman, who wears a size 12, weighs 144lbs and is 5 feet 4 inches tall.

Whither went the dolls of yesteryear? What happened to the limp raggedy Anns, and other cuddly dolls with their asexual bodies? When did these sexually non threatening toys lose their appeal, if they did? More to the point, who first put breasts on dolls, and gave them unattainable body shapes? It is a tragic fact that little girls in America start dieting as early as age 8 or 9. Eighty percent of fourth graders have already been on their first diets. At some later stage, 2 percent become anorexic, and 15 percent become bulimic. A recent study found that 70 percent of girls consider themselves fat.

An eating disorder is an abnormal drive for thinness. There are now more than 2,000 therapists in the U.S. who specialize in eating disorders. According to one therapist, "Millions of people go from false concepts of the female form to a struggle with eating disorders, which can be extremely dangerous, cause unbelievable suffering for their families, and in the worst case scenarios, death."
