"Mothers linked to daughters' eating disorders." In late 1991, these headlines were blazoned in newspapers and magazines. They came from the findings of a study into female attitudes towards food and beauty. The study examined pairs of mothers and daughters, with half the girls having eating disorders and half not. "It appears some of the mother's own dieting and eating behavior, and especially her concerns about her daughter's weight and appearance, pose a significant risk that a daughter will be disordered in her eating." In choosing a control group, the researchers had to exclude the lowest 10 percent on an eating disorder inventory because dieting is so pervasive that this group was not typical! These girls were in their teens; attitudes to eating are formed in early life.
A new documentary, The Famine Within, shows American women's collective obsession with body weight. Katherine Gilday's 1991 documentary makes a real case for the larger importance of this issue. Every era has its own idea of perfect virtue for women. The current ideal demands the triumph of denial over normal, healthy appetite. Faith in weight loss has taken on the power of religious conviction. Yet the standard to which so many women aspire "really has less to do with beauty than with the deep cultural meaning of body type."
